Impressive Performance with the Polestar 2 Plus
Our experience with the 2024 Polestar 2 Plus, featuring a rear-mounted motor with 299 hp and 361 lb-ft of torque, left a lasting impression. Fueled by Polestar’s upgraded 82-kWh battery, this variant boasts an EPA-rated range of 307 miles on a single charge. The powertrain’s responsiveness to throttle inputs, coupled with the initial torque from the rear, translates to a lively and enjoyable urban driving experience. The acceleration, clocking in at 5.3 seconds from 0 to 60 mph, positions it favorably against its Tesla counterpart, the Model 3 Highland.
However, the braking test showed a distinction, with the Tesla outperforming the Polestar, stopping from 60 mph in 115 feet compared to the Polestar’s 124. Notably, the Polestar’s one-pedal driving mode exhibited excellence, offering a smooth and controlled deceleration, complemented by a strong brake pedal feel.
Enhanced Dynamics and Extended Range
Beyond the powertrain, the 2024 Polestar 2 underwent suspension revisions, addressing previous concerns about vibrations on uneven roads. While some vibrations persist, the overall ride quality has markedly improved, approaching the refinement expected from a luxury car. However, there’s room for further enhancement in steering weight.
The extended range of the 2024 Polestar 2, EPA-rated at 320 miles for the highest variant, with our Plus model achieving 307 miles, aligns closely with real-world performance during our test. A future range test promises to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the Polestar’s capabilities.
Upscale Yet Controversial
Internally, the Polestar 2 maintains its identity with Google’s Android Automotive OS, embedding Google functionality. While the infotainment system boasts convenience, the graphics, particularly in Google Maps, leave room for improvement. The vertical layout of the infotainment screen presents challenges, notably with the placement of A/C buttons at the screen’s bottom, requiring a momentary diversion of attention from the road.
Despite these concerns, the Polestar 2’s interior exudes an upscale ambiance, distinguishing itself favorably from the Model 3. Noteworthy features include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and an overall premium feel. However, Tesla maintains an edge in interior space and practicality.
Polestar vs. Model 3
In the quest for supremacy against the Model 3, the 2024 Polestar 2 aligns closely with its Tesla counterpart.
